The hospital was founded in 1998 by Dr Jim Gollogly, a British-American Surgeon. It was originally a small project helping victims of landmine injuries and neglected disabilities following the war. Since then it has grown into a teaching hospital for Cambodian hospital staff. All treatment is free or below cost for poor Cambodian patients. The local staff have studied medicine but are supported by visiting medical staff in ongoing training including anesthetics, wound cleaning and dressing, sterilising, applying casts and learning how to be a surgeon, nurse etc. Every skill needs to be taught!
The hospital is a surgical hospital only and does not treat general medical conditions.
Angie's Story
Angie Annabel, wife of long time ORC speaker, Bruce Annabel, started as a volunteer in 2001 to employ and train a Physiotherapist. She stayed for 2 years! She has also worked in other counties including India, East Timor and Indonesia, but over the years she has returned as a volunteer to CSC to assist the one physio in residence. She takes surgical supplies and raises money to assist the hospital. Angie notes that the work is hard, the weather is sweaty and there are no dramas with OH&S...but it works. The hospital is successful and the poor patients are extremely grateful - this hospital changes their lives forever.
How can you help?
If anyone wishes to donate ($50, $100, $200, $500 or nominate your own amount), contact PSA Travel for direct bank details. There will be an opportunity during the post conference program for those who have donated to visit the hospital and see the good work they are doing.
