The Palace of the Lost City - Sun City - 22 - 25 September

As an architect or building designer, you can't fail to be impressed by how this visionary project seamlessly blends opulence with its natural surroundings. The Palace isn't just perched on an extinct volcanic site; it's an extension of the Pilanesberg mountains themselves.

From the moment you step into the lobby, you're transported into a realm where African legends come alive. Faux elephant tusks, bronze wildlife sculptures, and intricate mosaics tell the story of a lost African tribe, while vaulted ceilings and flame-topped towers create a sense of grandeur that's truly impressive.

But it's not just about aesthetics. The Palace offers a proper five-star experience, with 326 exquisitely appointed rooms an Olympic-sized pool, it's a masterclass in how architecture can create an immersive experience that goes beyond mere accommodation.

The Palm River Hotel -  01 to 04 October

As architects and building designers, we're always on the lookout for designs that seamlessly blend with their surroundings. The Palm River Hotel in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, is a prime example of how thoughtful architecture can create a compelling place to stay that harmonises with its natural environment.

Taking its cues from the iconic late 19th century colonial style and reimagining it for the African landscape is exactly what the team behind the Palm River Hotel has achieved.

The hotel's design is a masterclass in adapting to climatic conditions while maintaining aesthetic appeal. High ceilings and open-air settings create a sense of spaciousness, while the use of indigenous materials grounds the structure in its local context. It's a delicate balance between modern luxury and timeless charm.

What's particularly intriguing is how the architects have incorporated the Zambezi River into the hotel's design.  Most rooms offer unimpeded views of the river, creating a tranquil bubble just 4 kms from the thunderous Victoria Falls.  It's a testament to thoughtful positioning and layout.
