Wednesday 20 May - Tokyo to Nagoya
After disembarking from the ship in Tokyo, transfer to Tokyo Station to board the Shinkansen bullet train to Nagoya. During the scenic ride, a traditional Japanese bento box lunch will be served.
Our first stop is the city of Nagoya which offers a fascinating glimpse into traditional Japanese crafts and history. Begin with a guided visit to Nagoya Castle where beautifully restored palace rooms reveal the elegance of samurai-era architecture and artistry. This iconic site offers a glimpse into Japan’s feudal history and architectural grandeur.
Enjoy dinner this evening at the elegant Kawabun Nagoya, one of the city’s most historic dining venues.

Friday 22 May - Nagoya to Kanazawa
After breakfast, travel by coach to Shirakawa-go, nestled in the mountains of Gifu Prefecture. A visit to Shirakawa-go is like stepping into a living postcard of traditional Japan. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is famed for its Gassho-zukuri farmhouses - wooden homes with steep, thatched roofs designed to withstand heavy snowfall, resembling hands pressed in prayer.
Get a fascinating glimpse into the life of one of the village's most most prominent families during the Edo period. The beautifully preserved Wada Family Residence is the largest in Shirakawa-go and the only one designated as a national important cultural property. Inside, the first and second floors showcase traditional features such as the central irori hearth, a Buddhist altar and a small Japanese garden, which is a rare feature in the village. The experience is both educational and atmospheric, offering a deep connection to Japan’s rural heritage and the ingenuity of its traditional architecture.
There is time for lunch at leisure.
In the afternoon, visit Kanazawa Castle, originally built in the late 16th century. Although much of the original structure was destroyed over the years, the castle has been meticulously restored. The castle grounds include the impressive Ishikawa-mon Gate, which leads to Kenroku-en Garden, one of Japan's three most beautiful gardens. This spacious garden, dating back to the 1670’s, features stunning landscapes, including ponds, streams, waterfalls, and tea houses.

Thanks to its coastal location, the city offers exceptionally fresh seafood, including specialties like nodoguro (blackthroat seaperch), snow crab, and sweet shrimp, often served in sashimi or kaisen-don rice bowls. Local comfort foods also stand out, such as Kanazawa curry - a thick, sweet version served with tonkatsu - and Hanton rice, a quirky fusion dish featuring fried seafood, egg, and ketchup or tartar sauce. Kanazawa oden, a unique hotpot with regional ingredients, is enjoyed year-round.

Sunday 24 May - Kanazawa to Kyoto
Delegates transfer on foot to Kanazawa Station and board the Shinkansen to Tsuruga, followed by the Thunderbird 16 train to Kyoto.
Upon arrival, enjoy free time Nishiki Market, known for its vibrant food stalls and local delicacies. Known as “Kyoto’s Kitchen,” the market is packed with over 100 food stalls and small eateries, making it perfect for a casual food crawl for lunch.
The afternoon includes a guided tour of two iconic Kyoto landmarks: the golden Kinkaku-ji Temple and the serene Ryoanji Rock Garden. Your visit begins at Kinkaku-ji, a breathtaking Zen temple whose top two floors are covered in brilliant gold leaf. Set beside a tranquil pond, the temple reflects beautifully in the water, creating a picture-perfect scene that changes with the seasons. Originally built as a shogun’s retirement villa, it’s now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Kyoto’s most photographed spots. As you stroll through the surrounding gardens, you’ll encounter carefully manicured pine trees, stone lanterns, and a charming teahouse where you can enjoy matcha and traditional sweets.
Continue on to Ryoanji, home to Japan’s most famous karesansui (dry landscape) rock garden. This minimalist masterpiece features 15 rocks arranged in raked white gravel, designed to evoke a sense of calm and contemplation. Interestingly, no matter where you stand, one rock is always hidden from view - an intentional design that invites reflection. The temple grounds also include a peaceful pond garden and walking paths shaded by maple and cherry trees, offering a quiet contrast to the grandeur of Kinkaku-ji.
