Thursday 14 May - Naha Okinawa, Japan

Arrive Naha Okinawa at 8.00am.

Okinawa is the southernmost of Japan's main islands and lies 500 miles beyond the archipelago. Unlike other parts of Japan, Okinawa has its own, separate history stemming from the Ryukyu Kingdom of the 15th century. The nostalgia of royalty remains to this day, as sacred temples and an imperial castle blend with imposing skyscrapers and modern freeways. Though poor in natural resources, the people of Okinawa became skillful mariners, turning the island into a thriving center of trade. Today, its unique culture combines influences from Europe, China, Japan and Southeast Asia. During World War II, Okinawa was the only location in Japan where the Allies landed. From 1945 to 1972, the island was under the control of the United States military and numerous US military bases are still active today. Beyond the modern capital of Naha lie peaceful panoramas of hills dotted with blooming bougainvillea. Due to its tropical climate, sugar cane fields, luminous seas and white beaches, Okinawa is sometimes known as Japan's Hawaii.

The ship departs Naha Okinawa at 11.00pm.

Arrive Beppu at 11.00am.

Framed by steam-shrouded mountains, Beppu is a city at the pulsing heart of Japan’s onsen culture. The smoking fumaroles, bubbling pools, and spouting geysers that permeate the earth here across the Ōita prefecture produce more spring water than anywhere else in Japan. And with this come spectacular onsen resorts, spa hotels set into forest-fringed coastal cliffs, and traditional ryokan tucked into secluded bays. The top of Mount Tsurumi is the place to view this magical misty scene, climbing above city and sea to its 1,375m summit aboard the Ropeway cable car. In spring, the slopes below blush pink as some 2,000 cherry blossom trees come into bloom. Steam makes its way into Beppu’s distinctive jigoku-mushi cuisine, too, harnessing the hot springs to cook mineral-rich dishes. Hike through the caldera-sculpted landscape of nearby Aso Kuju National Park or, in spring and summer, kayak across the flooded rice fields and flowering marshland.

The ship departs Beppu at 7.00pm.
